IMD organised the National Meteorological Olympiad as part of the 150th foundation day celebrations
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) completed 150 years of its establishment on January 15, 2025. To commemorate this extraordinary milestone, IMD organized a series of activities throughout the year, starting from January 15, 2024. A key highlight of these celebrations was the National Meteorological Olympiad (Met-Olympiad), aimed at fostering interest and raising awareness about weather and climate sciences among young students.
The state-level Meteorological Olympiads were conducted online on December 14-15, 2024, with enthusiastic participation from students in classes 8, 9, and 11 across the country.
The top three winners from each class in every state were awarded prize money of Rs 5000, Rs 3000, and Rs 2000 respectively, along with certificates and mementos. These winners were invited to New Delhi to compete in the National Meteorological Olympiad, held on January 13, 2025.
The top three winners from each class at the national level were also awarded. The first prize winner received Rs 25,000, the second prize winner received Rs 15,000, and the third prize winner received Rs 10,000, along with mementos and certificates. The young meteorology enthusiasts, including both state/UT winners and national-level winners, participated in the IMD’s 150th Foundation Day celebrations on January 14, 2025. The national level winners also had a unique opportunity to interact with the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, followed by a photo session.
The first prize winners were:
- Class 8: Aditya Suhas Nair (Kerala)
- Class 9: Akshit Rawat (Punjab)
- Class 11: Shubham Deorari (Uttarakhand)
The second prize winners were:
- Class 8: Tanmoy Kashyap (Assam)
- Class 9: Sachkeerat Singh (Chandigarh)
- Class 11: Sutirtha Mondal (West Bengal)
The third prize winners were:
- Class 8: Kirushka M. (Puducherry)
- Class 9: Dishant Bezbaruah (Arunachal Pradesh)
- Class 11: Samrat Das (Assam)
