IMD to install X-Band Doppler weather radar in Assam University campus in Silchar
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Assam University, Silchar (AUS), for the installation of an X-Band Doppler Weather Radar in the university campus in Silchar.
The MoU was signed by Dr RM Pant, VC, AUS and KN Mohan, scientist-G and Head, Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati on Thursday.
Dr Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, scientist-F and Dr SI Laskar, scientist-E were present from the IMD side where whereas Dr PK Nath, registrar, Prof Piyush Kumar Pandey, director IQAC, Shubhadeep Dhar, finance officer, Dr Suprabir Roy, controller of examinations, Jayant Bhatta, director, College Development Council, Prof Parthankar Choudhury, dean of the School of Ecology and Environmental Science and Dr Atri Deshmukhya, Department of Physics were also present.
X-Band Doppler Weather Radar will help in research as well as improving weather forecasting, especially for Cachar and nearby regions.
The IMD is installing various types of meteorological instruments in northeastern states including 11 Doppler Radars in the region.
“Under the agreement, the MD will install radar in the AUS campus. AUS and IMD will do collaborative research.
“Weather surveillance in the Cachar area will be more precise. Weather forecast and warning accuracy will be enhanced,” said Dr Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, scientist-F, Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati.
