Implement NGT order and close down illegal coke factories
Peeved with non closure of illegal coke factories in Elaka Sutnga under East Jaintia Hills despite the NGT’s ruling, the Elaka Coordination Committee has urged the District Administration, East Jaintia Hills to implement the NGT ruling else they will seek legal aid.
In a letter to the DC and the SP of East Jaintia Hills, the Elaka Coordination Committee sought the implementation of the Honorable National Green Tribunal (NGT) Eastern Zone Bench, Kolkata Judgement pronounced on the 08th July, 2022 in the matter of Pynbait Sutnga versus Government of Meghalaya.
The letter reminded that as per Honorable NGT’s judgement points no. 48 “Such offending Coke plants which continue to operate in violation of the siting criteria norms laid down in the notification dated 23.12.2020 operate in violation of the human rights of the residents of the State of Meghalaya as well as every person visiting Meghalaya.”

They said that the continued operation of the Coke Plants to this day in Elaka Sutnga is a clear violation of each and every residents human rights.
They demand that all operations and logistics of all coke plants located in Elaka Sutnga, East Jaintia Hills District be shut down with immediate effect.
They also said that if the District Administration and the Government of Meghalaya fails to implement the judgement of the NGT.
They also said that should the Coke Plants choose to continue to violate their basic human rights, they will compelled to seek legal help and notify the NGT in this matter.
