Intensive checking of vehicles at entry points need of the hour for ending drug trafficking in Meghalaya: Shullai
A meeting convened by BJP legislator from South Sanbor Shullai on Friday resolved to demand intensive checking of vehicles at the two entry points – Byrnihat in Ri Bhoi and Ratacherra in East Jaintia Hills – to end the trafficking of drugs to the state of Meghalaya.
The meeting with the residents of the municipal area also resolved to intensify night patrolling in their respective localities following the increasing theft cases reporting from the different parts of the Shillong city.
Addressing media persons after chairing the meeting, Shullai said, “We have suggested that we have to check even if it is the vehicle of the chief minister or prime minister or MLA or businessman or anyone both private and commercial vehicles we have to check. If we continue to check for one year, I believe and do hope we can eradicate this drug menace in our state.”
He informed that the issue was also raised during the last MDA meeting and suggestions have been submitted to the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister incharge Home Prestone Tynsong and Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh.
“The main action that the government should take is we have to build or install checkgates to seal all these entry and exit points coming from Byrnihat and Jaintia Hills as we know drugs are being supplied through Assam and from that area it will come from Burma, Manipur, Myanmar. Until and unless we sealed all those main gates and entry and exit (we can never address this issue),” he opined.
Asked on the alleged nexus of law enforcers and drug traffickers, Shullai said, “That is why I have appealed to our police personnel and all stakeholders, we should work very sincere…Sincerity should be there only then we can eradicate this drug menace in the state.”
“Even military personnel were caught in drug cases. Even a few police personnel also were caught red handed with drugs. They are involved in drug trafficking. That is why I appeal to the government and all police personnel that they should work very sincerely,” he added.
Further, Shullai said that though the government is taking steps to address the drug menace issue but “it is still not satisfactory” adding “That is why I am calling this meeting to take all suggestions from stakeholders and will draft a resolution to submit to the CM, deputy CM and social welfare minister that we should be very serious on this issue.”
On the issue of treatment for drug addicts, the BJP legislator said that he had to extend financial help from his MLA scheme and salary to the parents of drug addicts, who are under treatment in the rehabilitation centres, as the cost is very expensive because they are mostly run by private organizations.
He also asserted the need to set up more rehabilitation centres. “The CM had given direction to officials to identify land in new Shillong and other districts of the state and once land is available, accordingly we will approach Amit Shah for funds for construction of rehabilitation centres so that it will be of great help to the drug addicts,” he stated.
Expressing concern over the increasing theft cases in Shillong, Shullai said, “These criminals don’t even spare to break the door of churches.”
He was referring to the incidents that took place at the Catholic Cathedral in Laitumkhrah, Unitarian Church in Laban and Adventist Church. “They have broken the door of the churches and stolen costly materials and items. We feel very sad that they don’t even spare the House of God. This is very serious,” Shullai said.
“Therefore, we have discussed and have decided to intensify night patrolling in the respective localities. We have called upon all residents of the respective localities through their dorbar shnongs to cooperate with the police department to do the checking and creating awareness,” he informed.
