International Day against Drug Abuse observed in Jowai
The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) of West Jaintia Hills District, in collaboration with the NSS unit of Thomas Jones Synod College, organised a programme to observe the “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking” on June 26.
The resources persons included Dr. JN Shullai from Mihmyntdu Community Social Welfare Association, B Majaw, Secretary of DLSA and Crescency W Lyngdoh, Additional Superintendent of Police, West Jaintia Hills.
Dr. JN Shullai emphasized the progression from experimentation to addiction and the need for empathy towards those struggling with addiction. She highlighted the misuse of medications and how addiction alters brain chemistry, leading to dependency. Dr. Shullai stressed the importance of preventive measures and lamented the lack of an addiction treatment centre in Meghalaya. “Keep the door closed. Learn to say No. Make the right choice, and avoid the gateway to drugs,” she urged.
B Majaw emphasized the harsh penalties under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, which extends to all Indian residents and those on Indian-registered ships or aircraft. She stressed the need to resist drugs and peer pressure, stating, “Drugs are not a food item to try out. An absolute No to drugs.”
Crescency W Lyngdoh discussed the severe social consequences of drug abuse, detailing different types of drugs, including natural, synthetic, and hallucinogens. She also explained common trafficking methods and the importance of recognizing signs of abuse. Lyngdoh urged vigilance and awareness to combat the threat of drug addiction.
The programme also featured a skit by students from the NSS unit, reinforcing the day’s message. As Meghalaya faces increasing substance abuse, such initiatives are vital in raising awareness and educating the community.
Similarly, the District Social Welfare Officer, West Jaintia Hills and Jowai City YMCA jointly observed the international day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking at District Library Auditorium, Mynthong with the theme, The Evidence is Clear Invest in Prevention.”
Deputy Commissioner BS Sohliya, IAS, O Lamin, MDC who also attended the programme highlighted the importance of the day and stressed the need for ongoing discussion to keep the youths and all individuals aware of the harmful effects of drugs. The speakers also highlighted the importance of understanding the danger of drug use and urged everyone to avoid all forms of substance abuse.
In her speech District Social Welfare Officer, R Passah informed that the whole month of June was observed as Anti-Drugs month and numerous awareness programmes were organised in villages, localities to address the issue of drug abuse and also extending support to individuals in need of assistance with substance abuse.
The DSWO office conducted a drawing competition for school students and certificates were awarded to the winners. The first prize and second prize were awarded to Durka Passah and Kyntu Lang-I-O Satein from Seinraij Higher Secondary School respectively and the third prize to Eldora Rymbai from Jaintia Secondary School, Jowai.
There was also an awareness on the prevention of suicide and mental. The resources person Shri. Keshav Laba, Counselor cum Centre in charge ODIC, Kripa Foundation Shillong, Dr. Dida Khonglah (MD Psych) Psychiatrist SAN-KER, Shillong and Shri. Eborwan mi oo Majaw provided the students with valuable insights and guidance about Suicide prevention and mental health.
