International Women’s Day 2025 celebrated in Khliehriat, honours women’s achievements

International Women’s Day 2025 with the theme “For All Women & Girls: Rights, Equality & Empowerment” was celebrated on March 8 at Khliehriat West Community Hall, Khliehriat.
The event was organized by the District Social Welfare Officer, East Jaintia Hills District, the District Sankalp Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), the District Project Management Unit (DPMU), Megha-LAMP, MBMA, and the District Mission Management Unit (DMU), MSRLS.
MLA of 5-Sutnga-Saipung Constituency and Chairperson of the Assembly Committee on Empowerment of Women, Santa Mary Shylla, attended the programme along with Deputy Commissioner Shivansh Awasthi, MDC of 28-Narpuh District Council Constituency Deivipaya T. Tongper, District Social Welfare Officer Rica Bareh, District Sports Officer Stephanie M. Rapsang, and others.
In her speech, Santa Mary Shylla extended her Women’s Day wishes and highlighted the state government’s commitment to improving women’s welfare. She spoke about various government schemes and urged people to report discrimination and violence against women.
Deputy Commissioner Shivansh Awasthi emphasized the importance of recognizing women’s achievements and addressing challenges they face. He stressed that women’s issues are social issues and called for equal rights and opportunities.
Other speakers included Rica Bareh, Deivipaya T. Tongper, and Rinibeth Patlong.
The programme also felicitated Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Brand Ambassador Batbitbha Bareh, Reigning Miss Tourism India Irene Dkhar, and other women achievers. Outstanding students were also honoured.
The event featured a cultural dance by Anganwadi workers of Saipung C&RD Block.
