Internet, mobile data suspended in 7 Districts of Manipur for two days
In light of the deteriorating law and order situation, the Manipur government has enforced a two-day suspension of internet and mobile data services across seven districts.
The suspension took effect at 5:15 PM on Saturday, November 16, targeting Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur.
The suspension includes internet services, mobile data, VSATs, broadband, and VPN services within these districts. However, leased lines and FTTH connections for government offices and entities operating under state grants are exempted, according to an official order by Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi.
The decision aims to curb misinformation and prevent potential escalations of violence. The government cited concerns that anti-social elements could exploit social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to spread inflammatory content, including hate speech, videos, and images, which could incite public unrest.
The suspension was deemed necessary to address the imminent risk of loss of life, damage to public or private property, and disruptions to communal harmony and public tranquility. Authorities emphasized the danger posed by false rumors and the mobilization of agitators through social media, which could lead to arson, vandalism, and violent activities.
The government warned that any violations of the suspension order would result in legal consequences. This decisive action is intended to thwart the designs of anti-national and anti-social elements, ensuring the safety and security of the public during this period of unrest.
