Interstate & local vehicular movement from March 2 to 4 over Sonapur Bridge as repair unsuccessful
The efforts of rehabilitation and rectification of the Sonapur bridge via Jowai – Ratacherra Road, East Jaintia Hills District is not successful as reported by NHAI due to plying traffic, additional cracks has been developed and appeared again.
The bridge is located in Meghalaya Assam border 2 section of NH 44 from 69.200 to km 172.200 (104 km) in the State of Meghalaya on EPC Mode.
In order to take necessary steps as may be required or warranted to be taken in such a situation to prevent any disaster and ensure safety of the commuters travelling, B Baranwal IAS, Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District issued further order for regulating flow of traffics over the bridge under section 34 (b) (m) of District Authority.
Section 34 (b) (m) empowered the Government in the event of any threatening disaster situation or disaster in response to any threatening disaster situation or disaster.
From 19.02.2022 to 22.02.2022 only LMVs shall be allowed during the period of repair.
From March 2 to 4, there will be complete closure of all types of vehicles for doing load testing on the bridge.
The order will affect the vehicular movements from Assam, Mizoram, Tripura and parts of Manipur as the bridge is the only route passing through Meghalaya.
