Interstate racket of wildlife smuggling surfaced in West Jaintia Hills
An interstate racket of trafficking of wildlife listed under Schedule-I and Schedule II of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972 along National Highway-06 surfaced with the arrest of two persons and subsequent rescue of seven wildlife from their possessions.
Police said that acting on specific input, one Tata Sumo bearing number ML11 0661 driven by Kormola Bru (24) of Mizoram was detained at Phramer, West Jaintia Hills and subjected to thorough check on Friday night. The vehicle was coming from Mizoram and bound for Guwahati.
Police informed that from the vehicle, they rescued two Hoolock gibbon, one Great Indian Hornbill, two Grey Langur, one Phayre’s leaf monkey and an Otter.
Police said that they are all endangered wildlife falls under Schedule 1& 2 of the Wild Life Protection Act & IUCN Red list.
Police said that two persons engaged in the transportation of the wildlife were detained.
The wildlife have been handed over to Wildlife Division Jowai for necessary actions.
