Jaintia Hills Wildlife Division recognizes heroes of wildlife rescue efforts
The weeklong celebrations of wildlife with the theme “Partnership for Wildlife Conservation” organised by the office of the Divisional Forest Officer, Jaintia Hills Wildlife Division, Jowai concluded on Friday. The valedictory function was held at Demthring village in the community hall in which the Principal Chief Conservator of forest (Biodiversity & Wildlife) and Chief Wildlife Warden Shri SM Sahai, IFS attended as a Chief Guest and the Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) Shri. P.K Agrahari, IFS as Guest of Honour.
Speaking on the occasion S.M Sahai said this year’s theme is relevant as most of the forest areas are under the private or community ownership and lone conservation effort of the department cannot be sufficient unless there is an active participation and active support from the communities which have been since long as a tradition. He extended his heartfelt thanks to all the local people for the support and hopes that they continue to support the department in conserving the forest and wildlife in future endeavours. He also congratulated the students for their active participation in all the activities conducted by the department.
The department had conducted painting and extempore competitions for the students and winners were awarded with certificates.
Wildlife Samaritan Award 2022-2023 was given to Shri. Daioo Wan of Moodymmai Wah Village and Smt. Kelsi Lapasam of Chutwakhu, Jowai for rescuing Barn Owls.
Wildlife Samaritan Award 2023-2024 was given to Shri. Monlang Talang of Nongbareh Rim Village for rescuing Leopard Cat, Shri. Hynruki Dkhar of Barato Village and Shri. Sambha Dhar of Ladthadlaboh, Jowai for rescuing Slow Loris, Shri. Achuhmi Lamare of Mupliang Village for rescuing Masked Palm Civet, Shri. Marbanki Law of Moolibang Shangpung Village for rescuing Asian Barred Owlets. Smt. Emmichirup Jones Pyrtuh of Sohmynting Village for rescuing Keeled Box turtle, Shri. Shanlangki Sungoh of Shagpung Khliehrangnah village and Smt. Fairy June Sungoh of Mootyrchiah village for rescuing Monitor Lizard, Shri. T.Padit of Mynsngat Village for rescuing Leopard cat, Shri. Liiomio Laloo of Tpep Pale, Jowai for rescuing Indian Giant Flying Squirrel, Shri. Saphiius Suting of Salaroh, Jowai for rescuing Tokay Gecko, Shri. Kopsarlin Rymbai of Salaroh, Jowai for rescuing White Breasted Kingfisher, Shri. Arban Sungoh of Mooralong, Jowai for rescuing Black Kite Indian and Shri. Damemaia Sakhiat Laloo of Khimmusniang, Jowai for rescuing Ferret Badger.
The department also felicitated the Rangbah Shnongs of six villages.
Additional Deputy Commissioner HM Kynta, Smt. N Laloo. MFS, Divisional Forest Officer, Jaintia Hills Wildlife Division, Jowai , Smt. M.Suchiang, Forest Pleader, Shri. S. Law, Range Forest Officer/c Umkiang Wildlife Range, Khliehriat, Shri. N. Medhi, Senior Biologist, Wildlife Wing, Meghalaya Shillong and Dr. Aniket Pawar, Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) were among others who spoke on the occasion .
The program was chaired by Shri. D.N War, MFS, Assistant Conservator of Forest, Jaintia Hills Territorial Division, Jowai and Shri. S P R Shullai, Range Forest Officer, I/c Jowai Wildlife Range, Jowai gave the vote of thanks.
