Jowai hospital team removes push pin from 14-year-old’s lung
In a remarkable and unprecedented achievement, the doctors and nurses of Dr. Norman Tunnel Hospital, Jowai successfully removed a push pin lodged in the right main bronchus of a 14-year-old boy. The complex, life-saving procedure took place on the night of March 26, despite limited medical equipment at the hospital.
The challenging two-hour operation was led by surgeons Dr. Benne and Dr. Chilling, with anaesthesia support from Dr. Ritchie and Dr. Jonathan, and assistance from paediatrician Dr. Nisalan. Dr. Prince and Medical Superintendent Dr. D Nongpluh provided vital encouragement and support throughout the process.

The boy, a resident of a village under Thadlaskein Block, accidentally swallowed the push pin on March 25. He was first taken to CHC Ummulong, then referred to Civil Hospital Ialong and Woodland WK Hospital, before finally being shifted to Dr. Norman Tunnel Hospital, where the object was successfully removed.
Medical Superintendent Dr. D Nongpluh congratulated the entire team, stating, “Huge congratulations to our doctors and nurses for their willingness to improvise, using every available means to save a life. This is a milestone not just for the hospital, but for healthcare in our region.”
