Innovation in Education: Jowai school launches Vocational Course in Agriculture
In what can be called a first of its kind, a renowned school in Jowai town will start training students in agriculture as part of their school curriculum.
This initiative was unveiled during the felicitation program of North Liberty Higher Secondary School, Jowai, which honoured students who excelled in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate and Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (Arts and Science Stream) on Saturday.
Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Sniawbhalang Dhar inaugurated the vocational course in the presence of AP Syiem, District School Education Officer of West Jaintia Hills District, and the school Principal, Richard B Uriah.
Richard B Uriah stated, “The Vocational Course in Agriculture will be integrated into the school curriculum to familiarize students with the agriculture sector. This course will help students learn the basics of farming.”
“Our aim is to teach students about soil preparation, sowing, harvesting, and we will also provide training in flower cultivation. The course is designed to encourage students to engage in farming and develop a connection with nature,” added Richard.
He further explained, “Considering the current scenario, where many students lack a connection with nature, this idea promotes students’ holistic development in both academic and non-academic areas. Through this course, students will be trained to produce and market agricultural products.”
When asked, Richard said, the course will be limited to current students. However, if it proves successful, it may be opened to aspiring individuals who wish to learn farming.
