Jowai to host Meghalaya Games 2025 after spectacular closing ceremony in Tura
The 5th Meghalaya Games concluded with a stunning closing ceremony at Tura’s P.A. Sangma Stadium on Saturday. East Khasi Hills emerged as the Champion of Champions, securing 132 gold, 105 silver, and 122 bronze medals. Ri-Bhoi and West Jaintia Hills secured the first and second runner-up positions, respectively.
Jowai is set to host the Meghalaya Games in 2025. Notable achievements include Pdiangsuklang Syngwan winning the highest number of medals in Swimming for East Khasi Hills, with 6 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze.
The event, graced by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, showcased sportsmanship and cultural richness. The 5th Meghalaya Games set several milestones, with 3000 athletes participating in 23 sports. The President of India inaugurated the event for the first time. Football took center stage, featuring thrilling matches, including a penalty shootout in the women’s U-18 final.
The closing ceremony featured a demonstration of Lawn Bowling, with the mascot Labasa, the Clouded Leopard, adding joy to the atmosphere. Cultural performances highlighted Meghalaya’s diversity, and the Chief Minister expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the event’s success.
Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri commended the athletes, expressing confidence in their potential to represent India globally. Plans for sports infrastructure development across the state were outlined, emphasizing the government’s commitment to nurturing talent.
The ceremony concluded with unique stories of athletes, including a 66-year-old table tennis enthusiast, an archer from West Jaintia Hills, and a dedicated volleyball player. The Chief Secretary envisioned Meghalaya as ready to host the National Games, emphasizing the transformative power of sports.
