JSU calls for upholding of fundamental rights of the Khasi Jaintia people in Block-I
Expressing urgency and concern over the protection and security of the Khasi Jaintia people from the Karbi people in the disputed areas, the Jaintia Students Union Central Body (JSUCB) on Thursday urged the Meghalaya Government to initiate talks with the Assam Government to address this situation and ensure the safety of the Khasi -Jaintia community.
In a letter to the Meghalaya Chief Minister, the JSU advocated on the need for dialogue and negotiation between Meghalaya Government and Assam Government to address the issue and find a peaceful resolution to the dispute.
Emphasizing the necessity of Investigation and Prosecution, the JSU said it would help in identifying and apprehending members of the unknown group responsible for the threats and violence, and ensuring they face legal consequences and it will send a message that such actions won’t be tolerated.
Importance of upholding Human Rights Protection, the letter called for ensuring that the fundamental rights of the Khasi Jaintia people are respected and protected, regardless of their location.
Underlining the need to Establishing Safe Spaces, the JSU said creating safe zones or community centres can provide a refuge for those feeling threatened and facilitate communication with relevant authorities.
The JSU suggested for regularly monitoring the situation and updating security measures based on evolving circumstances and it is essential to ensure safety of the Khasi Jaintia people living in Block-I.
