Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji sworn in as Chief Justice Meghalaya High Court
Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court on October 3. The oath of office was administered by Governor CH Vijayashankar in a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan’s Durbar Hall.
Justice Mukerji succeeds Chief Justice S. Vaidyanathan, who retired recently. Born on September 6, 1963, into a family of prominent lawyers, Justice Mukerji’s legal roots run deep. His father and paternal grandfather were barristers and senior advocates at the Calcutta High Court, while his maternal grandfather was a senior lawyer at the Kanpur District Court.
Justice Mukerji studied at the St. Xavier’s School and College in Calcutta, and later earned his LL.B. degrees from the University of Calcutta and the University of London. Enrolled as an advocate in 1990, he built a distinguished career at the Calcutta High Court, focusing on civil law, with particular expertise in revenue and arbitration matters.
Before his elevation to the bench, Justice Mukerji held key roles as Senior Panel Counsel for the Government of India and the Damodar Valley Corporation. He briefly taught at NUJS, Kolkata, in 2005 and was an active member of several prestigious legal committees, including the I.L.R. Committee and the General Committee of the Bar Library Club.
Justice Mukerji was elevated to the bench of the Calcutta High Court as a permanent judge in May 2009, and on September 21, 2024, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court.
