Justice Thangkhiew appointed as Acting CJ of Meghalaya High Court
SHILLONG: Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew has been appointed as the Chief Justice (Acting) of the Meghalaya High Court.
As per a notification issued on Friday, Thangkhiew will take over as Chief Justice (Acting) of the Meghalaya High Court following the transfer of the incumbent chief justice Ajay Kumar Mittal as new chief justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
Mittal will be sworn in as chief justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court at Bhopal on November 3.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew, Judge of Meghalaya High Court, to perform duties of the office of chief justice of that High Court with effect from the date Ajay Kumar Mittal relinquishes the charge as chief justice of the Meghalaya High Court consequent upon his transfer as chief justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court,” said the notification issued by Joint Secretary to the government of India Rajinder Kashyap.
It may be mentioned here that Thangkhiew took oath of office as Judge of the Meghalaya High Court on November 19, last year.
Born on December 24, 1966, Justice Thangkhiew has completed his BA Hons (Economics) from North Eastern Hill University in the year 1987 and LLB from Delhi University in the year 1990.
Prior to his appointment as Judge of the Meghalaya High Court, Justice Thangkhiew was enrolled as an advocate in the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh in the year 1990-91 and later designated as senior advocate by the Gauhati High Court in August 2010.
He has practiced at the Gauhati High Court, Princiapal Seat, Guwahati and Shillong Bench presently the High Court of Meghalaya. Thangkhiew has mainly practiced in areas of Civil, Constitutional, Customary (Local Tribal) and Company Law.
He has also been a member of several organizations and institutions viz member of the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, member of Meghalaya State Bar Council under section 58 of the Advocates Act of 1961 and the member of the Meghalaya state Law Commission.
