KHADC brought under Governor’s rule
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government on Friday imposed administrator’s rule in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
This came after the Governor Tathagata Roy has approved the proposal of District Council Affairs (DCA) department of the state government.
“The Governor has approved to the proposal and has appointed the deputy commissioner, East Khasi Hills District as the Administrator of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council in exercise of the powers conferred by sub-para (2) of para 16 of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution,” Deputy Secretary to the Governor of Meghalaya, Pravin Bakshi said in a letter to the DCA here.
In December last year, the state Cabinet had for the second time recommended the Governor for invoking the administrator’s rule due to instability in the KHADC.
The decision of the Governor also came three days after he had approved the list of executive members (EMs) of the KHADC while complying with the order passed by the High Court. Portfolios to the four EMs were also allotted by the KHADC chief Latiplang Kharkongor on Thursday.
The strength of the United Democratic Front (UDF) has increased to 16 after two UDP MDCs – Paul Lyngdoh and Teiborlang Pathaw – decide to extend their full support to the alliance also led by independent MDC from Nongthymmai Latiplang Kharkongor.
With this, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) was reduced to 14.
