SHILLONG: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has constituted the Waste Management Cell (WMC) to implement proper waste management in all the villages under its jurisdiction.
Announcing this here on Friday, KHADC chief Teinwell Dkhar told reporters that the WMC will also conduct a cleaning drive at Iewduh, which is the oldest traditional markets in the region, on the occasion of the World Environment Day to be held on June 5.
Dkhar said the WMC was constituted in compliance with the directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
The WMC will be headed by Council’s chief forest officer (CFO) R Kylla as the chairman and under secretary AL Basaiawmoit as secretary.
The Council has also appointed the Environment Engineer of the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board W Kharkrang as the adviser of the WMC, which is tasked to come up with an action plan to implement proper waste management in the villages.
The CEM further informed that the Council is also proposing to identity a suitable location for construction of a dumping ground. “We are also seeking financial support from the 15th Finance Commission for the implementation of this project,” he said.
