KHADC seeks Rs 72.14 Cr for developing town & rural markets
SHILLONG: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has sought financial aid of Rs 72.14 crore from the Centre for upgrading the existing town and traditional rural markets under its jurisdiction.
In a memorandum submitted to the Union Tribal Affairs Minister, the KHADC executive member in charge Jambor War said there are a number of town and rural markets which still lacks basic and modern marketing facilities.
“With the support of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, the KHADC plans to upgrade the existing town and traditional rural markets with all modern marketing concepts,” he said.
According to War, the Council would require Rs 45.95 crore for rural markets and Rs 26.18 crore for town markets.
He said the focus now is to bring the market closer to the people especially in the rural areas and creation and establishment of modern marketing concepts and facilities in places where the dilapidated traditional markets exist.
In the first phase, War said several rural economic hubs and growth centers will be identified for development of town and rural markets as economic hubs.
He said within these modern market complexes, stalls reserved strictly for women will also be created adding this will be in keeping with the matrilineal characteristics of these hills and also in promoting economic independence in rural women.
