Khasi, Garo languages recognized under Sixth Schedule: Rymbui
Minister in-charge District Council Affairs (DCA) Lahkmen Rymbui on Thursday said the Khasi and Garo languages are already recognized under the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India.
The usage of language is different and inclusion under the Eighth Schedule is different, Rymbui said while replying to a supplementary query raised by West Shillong legislator Mohendro Rapsang, who sought to know the ground for pursuing for inclusion of the two languages in the Eighth Schedule despite being recognized under Sixth Schedule.
Rymbui also reminded that the House had already sent a resolution to the Centre for inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages under the Eighth Schedule.
When Rapsang asked if any information was received from the Centre on the matter, the DCA minister replied saying “The chief minister has already replied in his reply to the Governor’s address, the member must remember that.”
Meanwhile, to a query raised by Rongara legislator Rakkam A Sangma, Rymbui said the government has already taken steps to promote and preserve Khasi and Garo languages starting from the elementary schools.
However both the Speaker and the minister were silent when Sangma requested to have proceedings of the House in Khasi and Garo language.
