Khliehriat rallies against drug abuse and HIV/AIDS
A public rally was held today in Khliehriat to raise awareness about drug abuse and illicit trafficking. Organized by the Red Ribbon Club (RRC) of Jaintia Eastern College, in collaboration with Kyrmen Foundation and the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society (MACS), the event saw enthusiastic participation from students and teachers.
The rally began at the Khliehriat East Parking Lot and ended at the Khliehriat Higher Secondary School Playground.
The rally was followed by an awareness program on HIV/AIDS, themed “United for a Healthier Future: Combating Drug Abuse and HIV/AIDS.” Cabinet Minister Kyrmen Shylla was the Chief Guest, joined by Dr. P. Nongtdu, Principal of Jaintia Eastern College, and other local leaders, teachers, and students.
Minister Shylla praised the organizers for their efforts and highlighted the need for everyone to work together to tackle the issues of drug abuse and trafficking. He urged attendees to use social media to spread awareness and encouraged youth to participate in sports and physical activities to stay healthy and avoid drugs. He also emphasized the importance of treating individuals with HIV/AIDS with dignity and respect.
During the program, R Patlong from the Mihmyntdu Community Social Welfare Association (MCSWA) spoke about the dangers of substance abuse, discussing how factors like peer pressure and family issues lead young people to drugs. She explained that drug and alcohol abuse can harm both physical and mental health and lead to legal troubles.
Sandy Tariang from MACS shared information on how HIV/AIDS is transmitted, including through unprotected sex and shared needles. He urged students to share what they learned about drug abuse and HIV treatment with their communities.
The event started with a welcome address by Principal Dr. P. Nongtdu and concluded with a vote of thanks from Assistant Professor B Dkhar.
