KHNAM MLA decides to abstain from taking part in election to lone RS seat
The lone Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) legislator from North Shillong, Adelbert Nongrum has announced his decision to abstain from participating in the upcoming election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat, slated to be held on June 19.
The MLA, who is part of the United Progressive Forum (UDF),which have regional parties supporting the MDA government, has cited that he is confused on the stand of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
“Therefore I will not be a part of the same decision in regards with the upcoming Rajya Sabha election which will commence on the 19 of June 2020,” Nongrum said in a statement issued here on Thursday.
“The same NPP cast for CAA in the Lok Sabha Parliament whereas here in Meghalaya the same so called NPP is demanding implementation of ILP,” he said adding “If I, being a public representative I’m so confused, then how much more will the people of the state be shocked and stuck in a real dilemma.”
He said that he will never go against the will of his people and will never betray their trust. “Wherever I am I will follow my conscience, my responsibility and my Vision because first of all I stand here with the mandate of the people,” he said.
The MDA is fielding Dr Kharlukhi, who is the state president of the NPP as its candidate for the lone seat.
