KHNAM opposes visit by Punjab govt team to Sweeper’s Colony
SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has condemned the state government for allegedly allowing outside forces to interfere into the Sweeper’s Colony issue pending the report of the High Level Committee (HLC).
The statement came as a reaction to the visit of the Punjab government delegation to the Sweeper’s Colony at Them Iew Mawlong on Wednesday.
The delegation has been deputed by the Punjab chief minister to meet the Conrad K Sangma-led state government following the recent threats issued by a banned militant outfit against the residents of the area.
“We strongly condemned the state government for allowing outside forces to interfere into the issue despite the fact that the HLC is yet to submit its report on this regard,” KHNAM vice president Thomas Passah said in a statement issued here.
“The question on the visit of the Punjab government team is whether they have come to make the residents understand or to add more fuel to the issue,” he said.
Passah was of the opinion that the state government should not allow such visits to take place to ensure peace and tranquility can be maintained.
“If these MPs and MLAs from Punjab are interested to take their people to their own state, we do not have any objection but we do not appreciate if they come to add fire to this issue, which is very sensitive,” he said.
