KHNAM to come up with a strong team to fight ADC polls, says quality matters over quantity
The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has said it is preparing a ‘very strong team’ to fight the upcoming elections to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), which is slated to be held next year.
“We are preparing a very strong team, which has one ideology and one goal with the objective to ensure that from next year onwards, we will see a better district council in KHADC so that we will uphold the spirit of the Sixth Schedule,” KHNAM working president Thomas Passah said here.
“As of now, it is very sad to see that the district council, be it ECs or various MDCs have not been able to live up to the objective of the Sixth Schedule. From our side, we are preparing a very detailed plan on this,” he added.
Passah is one among the eight candidates in the first list declared by the party recently. He will be contesting from Jaiaw constituency.
According to him, the SEC is in the process of screening the candidates and would soon finalize the second list of candidates for the upcoming elections.
Stating that the KHNAM is looking for a quality team, Passah said, “We have already rejected 2-3 candidates in the first phase. In the second phase, the candidates, who applied for a ticket, if we don’t see in them the quality, the intention, the spirit to work with the ideology of the party and to ensure we make a difference in the district council, those candidates will also be rejected.
Therefore, our route to the district council is quality not quantity.”
Asked, the working president said if there are quality candidates, the party will definitely field in all 29 constituencies in the Khasi Hills region.
“The second list will be out soon as it all depends on the SEC because they have a long process of screening the candidates and there is ground verification of the candidates. Therefore, it may take some time. We have given a free hand to the SEC as it is better to be late for one month than to fail for five years,” he asserted.
Further, the KHNAM leader informed that the party would soon come up with its manifesto highlighting the issues that it has been raising and knocking on the district council’s door for the past many years.
“Our manifesto will be in line with what the KHNAM has been saying and have been knocking on the district council’s door. We have been knocking on the door of the district council since 2014 urging them to amend the AD rules 128, wherein we specified who has the right to vote in the district council, which now nobody is doing. This will be one of our agendas,” he said.
“We have already spoken, insisted and demanded the KHADC in the past be it EC of the Congress or NPP, we have insisted that the Trading by Non-Tribal Regulation 1945 has to be implemented not to protect the trade of non-tribal but to protect the trade of indigenous tribal and not to generate revenue” Passah said while adding “We have been demanding the state government and central government and have insisted on the district council to relook at the presidential order 1950, which is still pending. This is also one of the agendas that we are carrying forward in this upcoming election.”
