Kiang Nangbah Government College selected for Swavalambini Pilot Project
Kiang Nangbah Government College, Jowai, located in West Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, has been selected for the pilot phase of the Swavalambini Women Entrepreneurship Programme, an initiative by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) in collaboration with NITI Aayog. Launched today, the programme aims to equip female students with entrepreneurial skills, mentorship, and business development support.
The launch event, held virtually, was inaugurated by Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State (Independent Charge), MSDE, who highlighted the importance of women-led enterprises in driving economic growth.
He is optimistic that the Project SWAVALAMBINI will be successful with the colloboration of MSDE, NITI Aayog, Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), NIESBUD, HEIs and the aspiring girl students.
Hena Usman, Joint Secretary, MSDE welcomed the Guests, Officials, participating HEIs faculties and girls particpants from all nine selected HEIs. Anna Roy, Chief Economic Advisor, NITI Aayog gave the opening remarks and Atul Tewari, Secretary, MSDE gave the keynote address. There was also interaction between the Ministry and students attending the event via video conference. The vote of thanks was conferred by Pritam Dutta, Director, MSDE. The whole event was compered by Dr. Lalit Sharma, Director, IIE from Gauhati University.
Pilot Project in North East
Along with Kiang Nangbah Government College, West Jaintia Hills, eight other Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Assam have been selected:
Meghalaya – Ri-Bhoi College (Ri-Bhoi) and North Eastern Hill University (NEHU, Shillong)
Mizoram – Government Champai College, Lunglei Government College, and Mizoram University
Assam – Gauhati University, Handique College, and Dispur College
Programme Structure & Impact
A total of 600 female students from these institutions will take part in the Entrepreneurship Awareness Programme (EAP), with 300 selected for the Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP). The initiative includes 21 weeks (6 months) of mentoring and hand-holding support, aiming to establish at least 30 women-led enterprises.
The selection of Kiang Nangbah Government College is a major step in fostering women entrepreneurship in West Jaintia Hills, providing students with the skills and resources needed to launch their own businesses.
