Knowledge sharing event of best practices held in East Jaintia Hills
The District Project Management Unit (Meghalaya Basin Management Agency), East Jaintia Hills District on Wednesday organized a knowledge sharing event of best practices at Khliehriat West Community Hall, East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat. Abhilash Baranwal, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat attended the programme as the chief guest. The programme started with a presentation by the selected farmers and entrepreneurs from different villages who shared their knowledge, practices, and success stories.
Addressing the gathering, Abhilash Baranwal, said that the programme was organized to celebrate the achievements of the entrepreneurs as well sharing the best practices and cultivate a discussion among the entrepreneurs, members of the community, and the line Departments.
“Meghalaya is a very young society in terms of the average age of the population,” he said, while also stating that the Central and the State government is providing adequate thrust on education and that most of the youth will be completing their education however, everyone will not be getting a government job, so it is very important to cultivate entrepreneurs amongst the local population so as to sustain themselves and also provide jobs to others and take care of their own family. “Since most of our consumption is coming from outside the state, there is a huge untapped market that if we start producing the same thing here we will be able to sustain a very large number of families”, he added.
In his welcome address, Hunlang Blah, DPM, District Project Management Unit (MBMA) stated that the aim of the programme is to impart information and to encourage replicating the best sustainable development practices to address the common challenges faced by many farmers and entrepreneurs. Furthermore, to encourage the farmers and entrepreneurs by sharing with them the journey of the best performing farmers in regards to the challenges and measures adopted in achieving their goals.
The Deputy Commissioner along with the Officers of the line departments handed over mementos as a token of appreciation to the 10 (Ten) best practices in East Jaintia Hills District, Iongkaluh VEC (INRM Sub Committee) received the best practices on Water Conservation & Irrigation, Jalyiah Integrates Village Cooperative Society (IVCS) for best practices on Rural Finance, Shankylliang Producers Group (PG) for the best practices on Handicraft, Mukhaialong village for Best Practices on Neutralizing Acidic Water (Open Limestone Channel) and the best practices on Conservation of Environment was given to Moolamylliang village.
Mementos were also given to Sunshine Ryngkhlem from Wapung Skur village for the best practices in Piggery & Apiculture, Iahphang Dkhar from Tuber Shohshrieh village for best practices in Strawberry Farming & Homemade fruit wine, Marius Tlang from Umrasong village for best practices on Piggery & Pineapple cultivation, Serious Dkhar from Ladwah Wapung village for best practices on Floriculture and Kyrsiew Ryngkhlem from Wapung Skur village for best practices on Organic Manure.
During the programme, an interactive session was also conducted wherein the community members, entrepreneurs interacted with officers of various line departments of the District.
