KSU condemns Assam police highhandedness, demands Govt to resolve border dispute
The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) North Khasi Hills District Unit has demanded the state government to take steps to resolve the vexed boundary dispute with Assam.
The demand was made following a clash between the local residents of Iongkhuli village in Ri Bhoi district with the Assam police, who allegedly stopped and removed the electricity poles erected by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) on Monday.
Member of the KHADC from Mawhati constituency Charles Marngar was also allegedly manhandled by the Assam police during the incident.
“We strongly demand the state government to resolve the boundary issue once and for all. The issue should not end just in talks between the states and should not make people residing in the border as scapegoats,” president of the unit Ferdynald K Kharkamni said in a statement while condemning the highhandedness and illegal encroachment of Assam police.
“That day will also not be far away when incidents will take place just like in Nagaland and Mizoram if our state government decides to be adamant towards the plight of the people residing along the interstate border,” he said.
He said that the KSU had from time to time asserted the need for the state government to set up police outposts along the interstate border. “However, the state government failed to pay any heed to demands made by us and the people of the area,” Kharkamni stated.
