KSU demand cancellation NOC for construction of a temple to avoid similar precedents
The Khasi Students Union East Jaintia Hills District demanded the cancellation of the No Objection Certificate or NOC for construction of Hindu Temple on Government lands in the District.
The KSU East Jaintia Hills District made the demand in a letter submitted to Deputy Commissioner, East Jaiñtia Hills District Shivansh Awasthi, IAS.
According to the KSU East Jaintia Hills District, they learnt that a No Objection Certificate (NOC) has been issued for the building of a Hindu temple on a plot of lands of 500-square-feet , which is a government land near U Mot Woh Kiang Nangbah. An additional 250 square feet have also been allocated for the construction of a toilet.
Expressing opposition to the grant of NOC for construction in government lands, the KSU said, “We firmly believe that it is not appropriate for any individual, group, society, or religious body to be granted permission to utilize government land for religious or personal purposes.”
They also reasoned that allowing such precedent could potentially lead to further requests for the use of government land by various groups in the future, which may have adverse effects on societal welfare.
