KSU demands action against ex-Guv
The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Thursday said it is the prerogative of the central government to ban the organization.
“To ban or not to ban us, well that is the prerogative of the central government,” KSU general secretary, Donald V Thabah said.
Stating that the KSU is neither a militant organization nor an armed group, Thabah said the KSU is also not a racist or communal organization.
His reaction came a day after the former Governor of Meghalaya, Tathagata Roy had demanded that the KSU should be banned like the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), a Khasi rebel outfit.
Thabah further said that the KSU is an organization which looks after the welfare and interest of the Khasi indigenous people as it does not want to see that the Khasis will be overwhelmed by the larger and major communities, like what had happened in Tripura.
“Seeing the situation in Tripura and the condition of the indigenous tribal of Tripura where they are not only marginalized but they are being treated like third class citizens, we don’t want the Khasis to be in such a situation in their own state…that is why we are being compelled to react each and every time in order to safeguard the rights of the Khasi people,” he said.
The KSU leader also said that the former governor, who is one of the main provokers, is trying to paint the KSU in a very bad light.
“Since he (Roy) is no longer governor of the state, the government of Meghalaya should take necessary action against him,” he demanded.
Thabah informed that two FIRs have been filed against four persons (for instigating communal riot) but unfortunately no action has been taken against them.
“Such inaction on the part of the government emboldens such people and this will enable them to continue to issue threats to the KSU,” he said. He also pointed out that the banners hung by the KSU were removed after 10 minutes but no action was taken on the FIRs that were filed two-three days ago.
The KSU leader further warned that the union will be compelled to react if such people continue to provoke.
