KSU demands appointment of a local prof as NEHU VC
The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has sought the intervention of the Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank for appointment of a local professor as the vice chancellor of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
“…the Union earnestly urge you to kindly intervene to this matter so that a local qualified professor will be selected to perform the obligations of a VC in lined with the motto of the University ‘to rise and build-up’ the aspirations and the need of the students of this University and of the state/region in general,” KSU – NEHU Unit president Pynshai Kupar Dkhar said in a letter to Nishank.
Stating that the NEHU was established to cater the students of the states of Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram, Dkhar said, “but after the two states received their own central universities, the jurisdiction of NEHU is confined only to the state of Meghalaya, thereby the union feel that only a Local Professor will be a suitable person to look after the university, as he will understand the problem face by the student of our state.”
He also said the Union has witnessed the decline in the overall University Ranking which is worrying for the students of the state.
“That there have been many incidents where the teachers and students’ body remonstrated by expressing their dissatisfaction against the last two vice chancellors for their inability to performed their obligations and their inability to put forth the solutions to the underlying problems within the Varsity,” he said.
Dkhar said since 1973 only one professor (L) Prof B Pakem from the Khasi community was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of this University.
He also reminded that many incidents the students and teachers body have expressed their concern over the need to appoint a local professor as a Vice Chancellor, as he/she will easily understand and addressed the problems that has been already subsist within the Varsity.
According to him, the Ministry has played a pivotal role in uplifting and safeguarding the very basis that our University has been built upon.
