KVK East Garo Hills holds state level workshop on oilseed production
Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), East Garo Hills (CAU-I), Meghalaya, organised a state-level workshop on “Current Scenario, Problems, and Solutions for Enhancing Production and Productivity of Oilseeds in Meghalaya” on March 26, at DRDA Hall-I. The event was sponsored by ICAR–Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research, Hyderabad.
Addressing the farmers, Senior Scientist and Head Dr. SM Hussain encouraged expanding the area under oilseed cultivation to boost production. He urged farmers to adopt improved varieties suited to local conditions along with proper agronomic practices to increase yields.

Dr. Yanglem Sofia Devi, Subject Matter Specialist (Agronomy), spoke on KVK East Garo Hills’ ongoing work in oilseed crop development over the past five years and highlighted success stories of local farmers.
Albert G Momin, ADC of East Garo Hills and Chief Guest of the programme, emphasized the potential of cultivating oilseeds like rapeseed and mustard in rice fallow lands to improve cropping intensity and increase farmer incomes. He also encouraged integrating beekeeping into oilseed cultivation for added benefits.
The event saw participation from public representatives, FPOs, SHGs, progressive farmers, and officials from various departments. Over 100 participants attended the workshop.
Scientists from KVK East Garo Hills and officials from line departments engaged with farmers, discussing challenges and practical solutions to increase the area and productivity of oilseeds in the state. Critical inputs such as biocontrol agents, kharif oilseed seeds, and biofertilizers produced by the Central Agricultural University were distributed to the participants.
