Leaders across political spectrum condole David Nongrum’s death

Two-time Congress legislator from Mawryngkneng David Nongrum passed away due to sudden illness on Tuesday morning. He was 42.

According to his father, Charles Pyngrope, who is also a Congress legislator from Nongthymmai, David was taken to the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) where doctors declared him brought dead.  

David had first won the election as independent candidate in 2013 and was re-elected in 2018 on a Congress ticket.

His sudden demise came as a big shock to the leaders across the political spectrum.

Condoling his death, Assembly Speaker, Metbah Lyngdoh said that David Nongrum will be remembered as a young and promising legislator who dedicated his life for the service of the people.

“As a second time legislator, he also contributed in the proceedings of the House and the Assembly committees,” he said while expressing his deepest condolences to the bereaved family.  

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma took to his social media and said, “Extremely saddened by the sudden demise of Sh. David Nongrum, Hon’ble MLA from Meghalaya. He was a young, dynamic and vocal leader who executed an impactful tenure. My heartfelt condolences to the family in this hour of grief. May his soul rest in peace.”

The Congress legislature party (CLP) also held a condolence meeting and paid rich tribute to the departed leader.

“We fondly remember his contribution for the upliftment of the people and the state. He was a very passionate and a very committed leader who would leave no stone unturned to ensure that he was able to fulfill the aspirations of the people,” Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma told reporters after the meeting.  

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong also recalled his association with the departed leader.

“It was the saddest moment and I express my deepest condolences to his wife, children, mother, father and all relatives and especially the people of Mawryngkneng constituency,” he said.

In a condolence message, Chairman of Privileges Committee, Saleng A Sangma and members deeply mourned the sad demise of Nongrum.

“The chairman and members of the committee recalled their warm association with him as members of the House and his contributions to the House and Assembly Committees,” it said.

Meanwhile, a notification issued by the Assembly secretariat also declared the Mawryngkneng seat vacant due to the death of the sitting MLA.
