Leaders of NPP-led MDA Govt should step down gracefully: Ardent Basaiawmoit
Opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit has asked leaders of the National People’s Party-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) to gracefully step down from the government following their humiliating defeat in the two Lok Sabha seats – Shillong and Tura.
“Yes, that is a very pertinent question. If the leaders of MDA still have self respect, they should have their own moral responsibility and gracefully step down from the government,” Basaiawmoit told reporters.
Ricky AJ Syngkon of the VPP defeated three times sitting Shillong MP Vincent H Pala of the Congress by a massive margin of over 3.7 lakh votes while Saleng A Sangma of the Indian National Congress unseated Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s sister Agatha Sangma by a massive margin of over 1.55 lakh votes of the total 6.74 lakh voters.
Basaiawmoit also termed the party’s landslide victory as a clear verdict that the people of the state have completely lost their faith and confidence in the MDA government.
“At the very outset I must give thanks to the Lord. This is a manifestation that God has revealed when we trust in him completely and definitely as a party, we are really humbled by this overwhelming support, trust and confidence that the people are giving us. This is indicative of the fact that the people of the state as I just said this is not an ordinary parliamentary election, it is a referendum, a clear verdict that the people of the state have completely lost the confidence of this MDA government.”
Further, the VPP president also claimed that today’s result also speaks volume of the fact that VPP is going to replace all regional parties in Meghalaya.
“As I have said we are fighting against all ruling parties and all the parties that are there because emergence of the Voice of the People Party is due to the fact that the failure of all existing political parties including the regional parties and we have many a time said that one find day the VPP is going to replace the regional parties, which we have done today through the results that you have seen today I think has speak volume of the fact that VPP is going to replace all regional parties in the state,” he said.
Lauding the wisdom of the people, Basaiawmoit said that the results of this election is an indication that no one can take people for a ride as there is an old saying which says that “you can fool some people sometime but you can’t fool all the people all the time”.
