Lelad hosts Watershed Yatra to boost water conservation

A Watershed Yatra Campaign 2025 under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) Watershed Development Component (WDC) 2.0 was held on April 1 at Lelad Village under Saipung C&RD Block, East Jaintia Hills District. The event was attended by Sutnga-Saipung MLA Santa Mary Shylla as Chief Guest, along with Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills District Shivansh Awasthi, officials from the Department of Land Resources under the Ministry of Rural Development, and other stakeholders.
Shylla congratulated beneficiaries of watershed projects and emphasized the importance of watershed management to address water needs in the district. She stressed the need for extending such projects to other areas while highlighting government support through various schemes, including those for women empowerment.
Awasthi underscored the significance of public awareness on watershed development and highlighted the necessity of inter-departmental coordination for effective water management. He pointed out that despite receiving high rainfall, the state faces water scarcity due to inadequate groundwater availability, necessitating proper watershed management. He also spoke about initiatives like afforestation to retain water for longer periods.
As part of the programme, a tree plantation drive was conducted, symbolizing a commitment to environmental sustainability. Watershed Committee members were felicitated.
Other highlights of the event include a short skit performed by members of Upper Lytein Watershed and cultural dance by beneficiaries under Wah Tangnub Khapiaba Watershed, which exhibited the rich cultural vibrancy of the area. Stalls showcasing fruits and vegetables locally produced by SHG members of the area were also put up during the programme.
The Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) Watershed Development Component (WDC) 2.0 focuses on sustainable water resource management, land conservation, and improved irrigation efficiency to enhance agricultural productivity. By integrating agriculture, afforestation, and water management, the program aims to create climate-resilient ecosystems while supporting rural livelihoods.
