Lightning road blockade pays dividend as repair of roads started in National Highway 6
The lightning road blockade in the National Highway 6 along East Jaintia Hills District by angry residents of Elaka Narpuh and members of JSM, JSU and HITO on Monday morning from 10 am onwards came to an end after 12 long hours following assurance of immediate repair and restoration of the National Highway by the District Administration.
Angered over the indifferent attitude of the NHAI to their plea and cry for immediate repairing of the roads, the protesters vent out their frustration by halting of vehicular movement so that they will be able to pressurize NHAI and the District Administration.
The National Highway 6 connects major part of Assam to rest of Assam via Meghalaya and it also connect Mizoram, Tripura and parts of Manipur with rest of India. However due to incessant rainfalls during the second half of year and heavy vehicular movement, the roads was badly damaged to the extent that there were more of large potholes and less of blacktopped road.
However, the protesters were courteous enough as despite their anger they did not obstruct the movement of ambulances, security forces and school buses.
The protestors agreed to call off their protest after Executive Magistrate S Marwein pleaded before them and assured them that the roads will be repair and restored to normalcy the very next day and subsequently vehicular movement were restored after 12 long hours of being halted. Notably, the repair of the roads started since Tuesday.
