Little Mary missed classes while Kong Heh & Bah Duh lost two days of earning courtesy the issue of garbage
Little Mary a Class III student missed her classes for two days while Bah Duh could not ply his tourist vehicle for past 36 hours and Kong Heh could not sell her vegetables in Iawshyiap for two days courtesy the issue of garbage, which remained unresolved by the Meghalaya Government.
For Little Mary it was a two days holiday and she enjoyed as she was already habituated to the long holidays during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it was a misery for both Bah Duh and Kong Heh as they could not earn their livelihoods for two days but they consoled themselves as the lockdown was for the issue of Jhep or garbage, which also affected them.
The 36 hours lockdown sponsored by the Dorbar Shnong Tympang Iawmusiang commenced from 6 am of Tuesday and culminated at 6 pm of Wednesday against the failure of the Meghalaya Govt to resolve the Garbage issue at the end of their three days deadline.
The Dorbar Shnong took the extreme step of calling the lockdown as the residents were unwillingly subjected to the foul odour emanating from the unattended garbage in Iawmusiang opposite Iawshor and in Thomas Jones Road and in all markets in Jowai Town.
Dorbar Shnong Ladthadlaboh, the Dorbar Shnong of Chutwakhu, Salaroh, Mookyrdup and New Hills joined the bandwagon of the 36 hours lockdown called by the Dorbar Shnong Tympang Iawmusiang.
Members of the Women Wing and Youth Wing of the Dorbar Shnong Tympang Iawmusiang and Dorbar Shnong Ladthadlaboh came to the road to implement the lockdown in letter and spirit and they did not allow any vehicles to proceed ahead if the occupants could not provide genuine reasons of their visit.
Students of Thomas Jones College, Jowai Polytechnic and Kiang Nangbah Govt College and almost all schools in Jowai Town got a two days holidays while banks shops and commercial establishments also downed their shutters.
Prominent market places namely Iawshyiap, Iawshor, Iaw Sein Raij and Iawthymmei remained closed. Most of govt offices functioned with skelton staff.
There were no tourist vehicles plying to Shillong, Lad Rymbai, Amlarem and other main villages of West Jaintia Hills District.
The lockdown was successful with no untoward incidents and the District Administration did not lock horn with the enforcers of lockdown.
Appreciating the support and cooperation of all people in the success of the lockdown, Tympang Iawmusiang Waheh Shnong Ajoy Lywait said Iawmusiang is a rice bowl not a dumping ground. He also said that they will write to the Chief Secretary to request her to expedite the matter.
Lywait informed from Thursday they will sensitize vendors and shopkeepers not to litter around until a solution is arrive to carry home the wastes accumulating in their business transaction.
