Lockdown & COVID do not stop cattle smugglers from making international clients happy
Lockdown or no lockdown, COVID or no COVID makes no difference for the witty cattle smugglers of Meghalaya as they always succeed in delivering the prized consignments to their elite clients across the international border thereby making a mockery of the system.
This came to light when the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel seized a total of 43 cattle from along the international border in the two districts of Jaintia Hills region.
According to Deputy Inspector General and PRO of the BSF U K Nayal, on Monday, a truck crammed with 22 cattle was confiscated by them after chasing it for a while at Sonapur in East Jaintia Hills District. He also said that the cattle were to be transported to Bangladesh through jungle trail of Umkiang/ Kuliang border area and the cattle were found tethered and crammed in a cruel manner violating the act of prevention against cruelty to animals.
The BSF senior officer informed another 21 cattle were seized by BSF from Nongkhen in West Jaintia Hills District.
“The total seizure made worth more than Rs 22 lakh. The rising demand of cattle in Bangladesh is owing to the occasion of ‘Eid-Ul-Fitr’ in the coming days,” Nayal added.
BSF troops are vigilant and active against any anti national activity through the International Border taking all preventive measures against COVID-19 pandemic, the BSF PRO said, “In current situation, we need to be more vigilant and proactive as the smugglers and other Anti-National elements may try to take advantage of the situation in implementing their nefarious designs.”
The trade of cattle smuggling is not a new one as it has been going on for the past few years but the immediate authority concerned have not been able to devise a system to detect whether the cattle transported are for domestic consumption or smuggling.
All cows smuggled to Bangladesh are bought from Guwahati and are transported from Khanapara to Nongpoh to Umiam to Jowai to Amlarem then enrouted to either Dawki Road or Muktapur Road. The imposition of lockdown makes it easier for witty cattle smugglers to carry on their business.
The million dollar questions that beg answer are: How are these cows loaded truck allowed to pass during lockdown, when all other businesses were closed down? How do these Cow loaded trucks managed to reach their almost destination all the way from Guwahati – Khanapara when they by-passed all the police stations and Police Check points?
Amlarem sub divisions has no slaughter house nor any market for Cows and all these cows loaded vehicles which meant to be smuggled to Bangladesh have to passed through Amlarem Police Check Point, who allowed them to passed through?

Cattle smuggling is nothing new to all of us the CHANA or motor smugling also is flourishing well ,surprise to see the attitude of the power holders in the state .Formal trade like export import is suspended due to deadly virus whereas cattles coming right from khanapara via NH to the international border has no effects seem the virus is very much related to the smuggling activities, otherwise how dared those smugglers operate openly even in broad day light shame to the system how do we expect that law enforcement deptt will dared to stopped or detained those smuggling items? Dont have the right to blame any officers this will not be justified if at all we dared to open up our mouth its deadly against those who hold the reign of the power on the state shame to the system, they are more dangerous and harmful than the virus of covid 19 high time we rose to the occasion or knock the door of the honourable place for justice Livelyhood is very much needed at this hours but not only to smuggling activities but a well as to formal trade which benefit not only the people in general but also state and central govt,
