Masked miscreants beat up 2 students inside NEHU campus
SHILLONG: Two students of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) including a member of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) were injured after they were attacked by a group of masked miscreants on Wednesday night.
An FIR was also filed with the Mawlai police station. A delegation of the HYC on Thursday also sought the intervention of the superintendent of police (city) SA Rynjah into the incident.
General secretary of the HYC Shillong City Enlang Sawian said the incident had taken place just hours after the HYC has formed and elected office bearers of its NEHU Unit.
He said around 10 masked people with rods came and entered the Kupli Boy’s Hostel while threatening the security guard not to interfere.
“As soon as they entered room no 18, they straight away asked who the HYC member is and when our member responded, they started beating him mercilessly while threatening him with dire consequences if he does not leave the HYC,” Sawian alleged.
A student of the Adult and Continuing Education department, who is a roommate of the HYC member, was also injured from the head after being hit with a rod.
“We strongly condemned this cowardly act and we warned such elements not to provoke us,” the general secretary said.
Asked, he informed that the SP has assured the delegation to seriously look into the matter. According to Sawian, police have been able to identify some of the miscreants and arrest will be made very soon.
Sources said the HYC member is a third semester student in the English department. Meanwhile, police are still investigating into the incident even as they have also seized the CCTV footages from the hostel.
