Massive fire ruins livelihood of 64 vendors
A massive fire broke out at Laitumkhrah market on Friday morning.
East Shillong legislator Ampareen Lyngdoh told reporters that the actual cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained but “preliminary we heard that there was a cylinder burst. How the spark actually happened is something which the fire department is now trying to establish.”
She informed that 64 vendors have suffered a big loss due to the fire incident. “We are finding space for them at the earliest.”
Lyngdoh also sought the intervention of the chief minister Conrad K Sangma to rebuild the particular location at the earliest.
“The chief minister has given us the assurance that whatever can be done would be done at the earliest,” she said while informing that they will be having a second round of meeting with the deputy commissioner on Monday.
“We have to address this issue at the earliest because the wage loss of these vendors would be very difficult for them as their family survival depends on this,” she said.
When asked, the legislator said the damage caused by the fire was up to Rs 1.90 crore.
“Of course this is what the vendors are saying but we are yet to find out from the DC’s office on the actual assessment of the damage,” he added.
