Mawlai crowned 4th Meghalaya State League champions
In a high-stakes showdown at the Wahiajer Multipurpose Sports Complex Stadium on Saturday, Mawlai SC emerged victorious against Shillong Lajong FC, clinching the 4th Meghalaya State League 2024 title with a dramatic 5-4 win in a penalty shootout.
The match, played in front of a packed stadium, saw ninety minutes of regulation time and an additional half-hour of extra time end in a goalless stalemate, sending the contest into a nail-biting tiebreaker. The tension-filled atmosphere kept thousands of spectators on the edge of their seats.
Lajong, who had previously secured their spot in the final through a tense penalty shootout against Rymbai Shkenshynriah, faced a determined Mawlai. The turning point came when Mawlai goalkeeper Lambhamiki Lamare blocked a crucial spot kick from Firstborn Roy Khongsti, sealing the win for his team.
The champions’ cheque of Rs 5 lakh and the trophy were presented to Mawlai by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar. The presentation ceremony was graced by other prominent figures, including Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla, Meghalaya Football Association President Hamletson Dohling, MFA General Secretary Sunesh Syiem, and Richard B Uriah, Principal of North Liberty Higher Secondary School, Jowai. Shillong Lajong FC, as runners-up, received Rs 3 lakh.
The MSL, since its inception in 2017, has brought together the best teams from MFA-affiliated district associations, with 24 clubs competing this season. The league, supported by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, continues to promote football across the state.
This year’s final in Wahiajer marked a new milestone, as the MSL aims to reach different corners of Meghalaya. Mawlai’s victory continues the league’s tradition of having different champions for each edition. The first final was won by Niaw Wasa United, followed by Lajong in 2019, Rangdajied United in 2023, and now Mawlai.

Mawlai’s rise has been noteworthy, regaining promotion to the Shillong Premier League in 2020 after missing the first two MSL editions. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic causing delays, they won the SPL title in 2022 and defended it in 2023. Under the leadership of coach Hering Shangpliang, Mawlai secured the MSL 2024 title, adding to their accolades.
The final match saw Mawlai launch relentless attacks, hitting the crossbar twice during extra time. Captain Brolington Warlarpih, who struck the bar the second time, fittingly converted the decisive penalty.
Individual awards were also distributed. Lajong’s Iohborlang Lyngdoh Lyngkhoi was named Player of the Final, while Mawlai players Lambhamiki Lamare (Golden Glove), Khrawkupar Jana (Golden Boot with 12 goals), and Damanbhalang Chyne (Golden Ball) were honoured.
As the 5th MSL approaches, district leagues are already underway, determining future participants. The MSL’s influence has significantly raised the standard of football in Meghalaya, inspiring clubs and players to strive for the coveted title of Champions of Meghalaya.
