Mawlai MLA opposes dumping of garbage at Marten by trucks from other districts
Opposition Chief Whip and legislator from Mawlai PT Sawkmie on Friday asked government authorities concerned to stop garbage trucks from other districts from dumping their wastes at Marten dumping ground in Mawlai Mawiong here.
Sawkmie in his letter has asked the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) and the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police to take necessary action on the matter.
This came after garbage collected from Jowai, the district headquarter of West Jaintia Hills, was allegedly dumped at Marten.
Sawkmie said that as MLA of Mawlai constituency, he totally opposed this idea to burden the Marten.
He further questioned how the garbage trucks from other districts are allowed to come to the state capital when inter-district movement is still being restricted by the government due to the ongoing second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I request you to stop the wastes from other districts to be dumped at Mawlai Marten for the overall interest,” the MLA said in his letter to the SMB CEO.
He also requested the board to come up with a clarification as regards to the bio-medical wastes raised by the youth organizations from Mawlai which is a concern in terms of health condition and environment.
Meanwhile, the MLA also asked the SP to instruct the police personnel on duty to stop and return back all such garbage vehicles to their respective districts.
