Mawlai SC clinches back to back Shillong Premier League titles with 1-0 win against Rangdajied

Mawlai SC celebrated a double victory today as they successfully defended their Shillong Premier League title, defeating Rangdajied United FC 1-0 in the SPL 2023 final.

Donald Diengdoh (26′) secured the sole goal with a commanding header at the SSA Stadium, First Ground, Polo. Despite Rangdajied’s relentless efforts, including hitting the crossbar in the second half, Mawlai maintained their lead.

Rangdajied, for the second consecutive season, settled for the runner-up position, regretting missed opportunities as they had done in 2022.

In the presence of esteemed guests such as Meghalaya’s Chief Secretary, DP Wahlang, and the Chief Engineer of the State Sports Council Meghalaya, BM Syiem, Mawlai was awarded the champions’ trophy and a prize of Rs 3 lakh. Rangdajied received the runner-up prize of Rs 1.5 lakh. Notable figures like Meghalaya Football Association President H Dohling and Shillong Sports Association President Eugeneson Lyngdoh were also in attendance.

The highly-anticipated match drew a packed stadium, with Mawlai supporters notably prominent with their vibrant yellow flags. The electrifying atmosphere matched the intense action on the field.

Despite concerns about his fitness following a missed semifinal due to injury, Donald made it to Mawlai’s starting lineup and delivered the crucial goal, his sixth of the season. Rangdajied, eager for a comeback in the second half, made attacking substitutions, but ultimately fell short.

The match witnessed dramatic moments, including a close attempt by Rangdajied in stoppage time, where a header hit the crossbar and sparked a debate over whether it had crossed the line. Nonetheless, Mawlai emerged victorious, concluding the 2023 season of the SSA’s football pyramid on a high note.

With the conclusion of the 2023 season, attention now turns to the upcoming 2024 season, starting with the Fourth Division, marking the beginning of another exciting chapter in the football pyramid.
