Mawryngkneng village dorbar bans single-use plastic
SHILLONG: The dorbar shnong of Mawryngkneng in East Khasi Hills District has decided to ban use of plastic in the village including Pomtiah market. Residents of the village also took pledge by saying no to plastic, which was administered by the sordar Peter J Lawai during the dorbar meeting held on October 2.
Lawai said the village dorbar has unanimously taken the decision in line with the Centre’s endeavor to end the dependent on single-use plastic, which is affecting the environment. “There will be a total ban on use of plastic in the village with immediate effect,” he said.
During the meeting, secretary of the village Wanlambok Kharsati highlighted the ill-effects of plastic and encourage the people to use alternatives such organic bags and others as a first step to saving the environment.
Later, the residents of the village also took part in picking up plastic waste along the national highway.
Mawryngkneng Block Development Officer Ronney Wahlang also inspected the cleaning drive as he urged the people including shopkeepers to join the fight against plastic.
Meanwhile, the village dorbar also warned people from outside from dumping garbage in any part of the village. The sordar also asked shopkeepers to surrender all the plastics to the office of the dorbar shnong in order to hand over the same to the government authorities.
