MCTA decides to boycott 1st semester classes as a mark of protest against NEHU’s decision to implement NEP
The Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association (MCTA) has decided to boycott the first semester classes as a mark of protest against the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU)’s impassive attitude to implement the new National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 in the state.
The decision was taken at an emergent meeting of the association held on Saturday.
The MCTA in a statement said, “(We) strongly condemns the callous, impassive and obstinate attitude exhibited by the NEHU administration, particularly the vice chancellor, in pushing forward the implementation of NEP 2020 without it being passed by the Academic Council.”
“Consequently, in an emergent meeting held via online mode on July 29, after threadbare discussion of the impassive attitude of NEHU administration particularly of the Vice Chancellor, Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla, a unanimous decision was taken to launch a non cooperation movement against NEHU by boycotting the first semester classes under FYUP,” it said.
The statement said, “It is hereby notified to all MCTA unit members that “starting from August 1, 2023, until further notice, all members are to boycott first semester classes. Moreover, members are directed to shun/reject all responsibilities related to the implementation of the NEP 2020 with immediate effect.”
However, regarding 3rd and 5th semester, the classes will function without any disruption. Therefore, the members are to attend to the clases and service the course as per schedule, it said.
Further, the MCTA also stated, “We understand the challenges this decision might pose, however, as proven in the past of your committed allegiance/commitment to the cause of the association, it is crucial that we stand united and firm to ensure that the due processes of our academic institutions are respected and also to safeguard the interest of all stakeholders, particularly the students.”
