MDA nominates Dr Kharlukhi as candidate for lone Rajya Sabha seat
National People’s Party (NPP) state president Dr Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi has been unanimously nominated as the candidate of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government for the election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat slated to be held on March 26.
The candidature of Dr Kharlukhi was announced after his name was recommended by the sub-committee constituted by the MDA here on Wednesday. The sub-committee was headed by the deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong with representatives from all coalition partners as members.
“Dr Kharlukhi was unanimously nominated to be the MDA candidate for the election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat,” Tynsong told reporters.
He however refused reveal the other names that the sub-committee had also scrutinized during its two sittings held recently.
“Since the name of Dr Kharlukhi has been recommended as the candidate, it is not necessary to discuss about other names,” the chairman of the sub-committee said.
When asked that Dr Kharlukhi had earlier declined the offer, Tynsong however said, “That was his personal opinion. It was also my personal opinion that I wish the party to allow me to contest (the election). However ultimately he has to respect the decision taken by the MDA.”
Earlier, the NPP state president had expressed that he was open to the offer to contest the Rajya Sabha election.
