Meghalaya: 3 more dies of COVID-19, 161 fresh cases detected
Three COVID-19 patients died in the city, taking the death toll to 32 on Thursday, even as 161 fresh cases have been detected, taking the count to 1,983.
74-year-old Diwanti Thapa, a resident from Mawbah, Shillong passed away at the Shillong Civil Hospital, while another Lorrence Lyngkhoi (72) was declared brought dead in the Supercare hospital and Dilli Thapa (60) died at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Director of Health Services (MI), Dr Aman War said.
He said initially Diwanti was admitted at the Bethany hospital on September 8, where she was tested positive for COVID-19 but as her condition worsened, she was referred to the Shillong Civil hospital.
“She was admitted at the civil hospital at 8.40 pm on September 16, but she passed away at 9.25 pm on the same day. The cause of death was due to COVID-19 pneumonia with acute respiratory distress syndrome with septic shock. She was having diabetes, hypertension and heart disease,” he said.
Dr War said Lyngkhoi, a resident of Shyiap, was tested positive for COVID-19 with antigen twice after he was brought dead to Supercare hospital at 9.45 pm on September 16. “As his relatives wanted to take the body to Shillong civil hospital or NEIGRIHMS, protocols for the body were done at the Supercare hospital and it was accordingly transferred to the Shillong civil hospital, where it also completed all formalities as per dead body management protocol. After having done this, the relatives were allowed to be taken for funeral and the whole process has been completed today,” he said.
He said Dilli from Mawbah, Shillong, who was a cancer patient, was taken to NEIGRIHMS on September 14.
“He was tested positive for COVID-19 while being treated at the COVID-ICU but as his condition worsened he passed away at 7.10 am today due to type-I respiratory failure with COVID pneumonia with sepsis,” he added.
Of the 161 cases, the senior medical officer said 105 cases were detected from East Khasi Hills district, 28 from East Jaintia Hills district, 12 from West Garo Hills district, 9 from Ri Bhoi district, 3 from South West Garo Hills district, 2 from East Garo Hills district and 1 from West Khasi Hills district.
He said the cases in Shillong include 12 from the Raj Bhavan cluster, 11 from Keating Road cluster, 10 from Nongmynsong, 6 from Mawprem, 8 from Khyndai-Lad, 1 health worker, and 32 are high risk contacts.
He said the new cases in East Jaintia Hills were all from the Star Cement cluster at Lumshnong village.
Dr War also said 78 more patients including 37 in East Khasi Hills, 29 in West Garo Hills, 4 in West Jaintia Hills, 3 each in North Garo Hills and Ri Bhoi and 1 each in South West Garo Hills and South West Khasi Hills, have also recovered from the viral infection today.
The state has so far recorded a total of 4,357 positive cases of which 1,983 are active, 2,342 recovered and 32 deaths.
East Khasi Hills has the highest number of active cases with 1,319 cases that include 1,074 civilians and 245 armed forces/paramilitary forces, followed by East Jaintia Hills with 265 cases, 166 in Ri Bhoi, 160 in West Garo Hills, 18 in South Garo Hills, 13 in West Khasi Hills, 10 in West Jaintia Hills, 8 in North Garo Hills, 5 in East Garo Hills and 4 in South West Garo Hills.
Till date, a total of 1,27, 571 samples have been tested of which 1,22,348 were found to be negative while 867 are awaited. There are 37,455 entrants from outside the state
