Meghalaya: 3 more dies of COVID-19, death toll rises to 38
Three persons, who had tested positive for COVID-19, have died, taking the death toll in the state to 38 on Monday, even as 73 new cases were detected, taking the count to 2,169.
46-year-old Juthika Ghosh, a resident of Jail Road passed away at Nazareth hospital on September 19, while another 48-year-old Jyotimoi Sharma died at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) hospital on the same day, Director of Health Services (MI), Dr Aman War said.
He said Ghosh was initially admitted at the Woodland hospital and was tested positive for COVID-19 with rapid antigen on September 18. She was later referred to Nazareth hospital, where she expired on September 19.
“As per a report received from the Nazareth hospital, she was diagnosed with COVID-19, severe anemia, thrombocytopenia with cerebrovascular accident. However, this is still not fully diagnosed,” he said.
On the other hand, Dr War said Sharma, a resident of Tripura had attended the NEIGRIHMS emergency on September 8, with a history of sudden loss of consciousness and difficulty in breathing and had tested positive for COVID-19.
Treatment and overall management was provided to the patient but he could not survive and expired at 5 pm on September 19. The immediate cause of death is due to septic shock with type-1 respiratory failure, COVID-19 pneumonia and intracerebral hemorrhage, he said.
Dr War also informed that a report was also received from NEIGRIHMS that a 75-year-old Ranjit Kumar Das from Karimganj, Assam, who was admitted at the hospital on September 20, with multiple disorders and COVID-19 positive, passed away today at 10 am.
“The cause of death is due to type 1 respiratory failure with septic shock with COVID-19 pneumonia with type-2 diabetes mellitus and parkinsonism,” he said while adding since the patient was already tested COVID-19 positive in Assam, his case will not be counted as COVID death in Meghalaya.
Out of the 73 new cases, the senior medical officer informed 59, were detected from East Khasii Hills district, 12 from West Garo Hills district, 1 each from North Garo Hills district and West Jaintia Hills district.
He said at least six health workers were tested positive in the state of which one is a doctor from Woodland hospital and a health worker, who got tested at NEIGRIHMS are from East Khasi Hills while 8 health workers are from Holy Cross hospital in Tura.
The others include 48 high risk contacts, 6 armed forces and paramilitary forces (AF/PF) personnel and 3 returnees from East Khasi Hills, 4 AF/PF from West Garo Hills, 1 returnee from North Garo Hills and 1 high risk contact in West Jaintia Hills.
Meanwhile, 15 more patients, including 6 from West Garo Hills, 4 from Ri Bhoi, 3 from South West Garo Hills and 2 from East Jaintia Hills, have recovered from the viral infection.
The state so far has recorded a total of 4,734 positive cases of which 2,169 are active, 2,527 recovered and 38 deaths.
East Khasi Hills, where the state capital is located, is the worst affected district with 1,569 active cases, that includes 1,324 civilians and 245 AF/PF personnel, followed by East Jaintia Hills with 273 cases, 138 in Ri Bhoi, 129 in West Garo Hills, 14 in South West Garo HIlls, 13 in West Khasi Hills, 10 in West Jaintia Hills, 8 in South Garo Hills, 6 in South West Khasi HIlls, 5 in East Garo Hills and 4 in North Garo Hills.
Till date, a total of 1,33,259 samples have been sent for testing of which 1,27, 589 were found to be negative while test results of 937 are awaited. There are 38,953 entrants from outside the state.
