Meghalaya: 65-year-old man dies of COVID-19, toll at 63
A 65-year-old man, who tested positive for COVID-19, died IN South West Garo Hills district taking the death toll in the state to 63 on Sunday, even as 139 cases were detected pushing the count to 2,478.
Samarjeet Gupta, a resident of Mahendraganj, Chapahati, PWD Colony, succumbed to his illness at the Ampati civil hospital on Saturday, Director of Health Services (MI), Dr Aman War said.
“The cause of death was due to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) with COVID-19, with bronchial asthma and hypertension,” he said.
The senior medical officer informed that the fresh cases include 74 from East Khasi Hills district, 25 Ri Bhoi district, 17 West Garo Hills distrct, 9 East Garo Hills district, 5 South West Khasi Hills district, 4 South West Garo Hills district, 2 West Jaintia Hills district, 2 West Khasi Hills district and 1 South Garo Hills district.
He said 3 health workers (1 from East Khasi Hills and 2 from Ri Bhoi), and 3 police personnel from East Garo Hills (2) and West Jaintia Hills (1), were also among those tested positive for the viral infection.
Out of the 97 recovered COVID-19 patients, Dr War said, 61 are from East Khasi Hills, 13 Ri Bhoi, 7 West Garo Hills, 7 South West Garo Hills, 6 East Jaintia Hills and 3 West Jaintia Hills.
He said 5,142 COVID-19 patients have been discharged as on date.
The state has detected a total of 7,683 COVID-19 out of which 2,478 are active cases, 5,142 recovered and 63 deaths.
East Khasi Hills district tops the list of districts in positive cases with 1,738 infections, that include 35 Armed Forces and Paramilitary Forces and 1,736 civilians, followed by Ri Bhoi 332 and West Garo Hills 171.
In the other districts, 56 cases in West Jaintia Hills, 34 in South West Garo Hills, 25 in East Jaintia Hills, 35 in South Garo Hills, 26 in North Garo Hills, 36 in South West Khasi Hills, 21 in East Garo Hills and 6 in West Khasi Hills.
