Meghalaya: 68-yr-old dies of COVID-19, death toll rises to 123
A sixty eight-year-old man died due to COVID-19, taking the death toll to 123 in the state on Thursday.
Purna Ram Das passed away at his residence at Barengapara, Dalu in West Garo Hills district at 1.15 pm on Wednesday, Director of Health Services (MI), Dr Aman War said.
“He was tested positive for COVID-19 on December 1. He was an old case of stroke with paralysis since 2014. The cause of death was due to hypertension with left sided hemiplegia,” he said.
Meanwhile, 75 new cases have been detected while 28 patients have recovered from the viral infection on Thursday.
Dr War said the new cases include 57 from East Khasi Hills district, 5 West Jaintia Hills district, 3 West Garo Hills district, 3 South Garo Hills district, 2 East Garo Hills district, 2 South West Khasi Hills district, 1 Ri Bhoi district, 1 South West Garo Hills district and 1 North Garo Hills district.
Those tested positive also include 7 armed force/paramilitary force personnel (in East Khasi Hills), 3 police personnel (2 in East Khasi Hills and 1 in South Garo Hills), 1 health worker and 5 returnees ( in East Khasi Hills).
Of the 28 recovered patients, Dr War said 14 are from East Khasi Hills, 5 West Garo Hills, 3 East Garo Hills, 2 Ri Bhoi, 2 South Garo Hills and 2 South West Khasi Hills.
So far, the state has detected a total of 12,586 COVID-19 cases out of which 580 are active cases, 11,883 recovered and 123 deaths.
Dr War said the fatality rate due to COVID-19 as on Wednesday is 0.98 percent.
Of the total active cases, East Khasi Hills has 334 positive cases, West Garo Hills 94, West Jaintia Hills 54, Ri Bhoi 24, East Garo Hills 23, South West Garo Hills 21, West Khasi Hills 9, North Garo Hills 8, East Jaintia Hills 6, South West Khasi Hills 4 and South Garo Hills 3.
“Till date, swab samples of 2,61,625 persons have been tested of which 2,49,039 were found negative,” the senior medical official said.
There are 69,736 entrants from outside the state.
