Meghalaya: 75-year-old man succumbs to COVID-19, 88 new cases detected
A 75-year-old man, who tested positive for COVID-19, died at a city hospital taking the death toll in the state to 64 on Sunday, even as 88 cases were detected pushing the count to 2,434.
Ramdhan Chanda, a resident of Laban, succumbed to his illness at the Bethany hospital today at 10.40 am, Director of Health Services (MI), Dr Aman War said.
“The cause of death was due to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) with COVID-19, with acute kidney injury and hypertension with obstructive uropathy,” he said.
The senior medical officer informed that the new cases include 50 from East Khasi Hills district, 26 West Jaintia Hills district, 10 West Garo Hills district, 1 Ri Bhoi district, and 1 East Jaintia Hills district.
He said 3 health workers (1 from East Khasi Hills and 2 from Ri Bhoi), and 3 police personnel from East Garo Hills (2) and West Jaintia Hills (1), were also among those tested positive for the viral infection.
Out of the 131 recovered COVID-19 patients, Dr War said, 86 are from East Khasi Hills, 11 South West Garo Hills, 11 South West Khasi Hills, 7 Ri Bhoi, 6 North Garo Hills, 5 East Jaintia Hills, 4 West Garo Hills and 1 West Jaintia Hills.
He said 5,273 COVID-19 patients have been discharged as on date.
The state has detected a total of 7,771 COVID-19 out of which 2,434 are active cases, 5,273 recovered and 64 deaths.
East Khasi Hills district tops the list of districts in positive cases with 1,699 infections, that include 27 Armed Forces and Paramilitary Forces and 1,672 civilians, followed by Ri Bhoi 325 and West Garo Hills 178.
In the other districts, 81 cases in West Jaintia Hills, 23 in South West Garo Hills, 22 in East Jaintia Hills, 35 in South Garo Hills, 20 in North Garo Hills, 25 in South West Khasi Hills, 20 in East Garo Hills and 6 in West Khasi Hills.
“Till date, swab samples of 1,74,756 persons have been tested of which 1,66,985 were found negative,” the senior medical official said.
There are 47,076 entrants from outside the state.
